The Rent Trap

You don't own your business if you rent the tools that run it.

PAID IN FULL

ANNUAL RENTAL RECEIPT

Invoicing software$348/yr
Time tracking$144/yr
Project management$168/yr
Cloud storage for backups$72/yr
Password manager (for all those accounts)$48/yr
Your data, held hostage — TOTAL$780/yr

What you own at the end: nothing

Stop for a second. If you stopped paying tomorrow, how much of your business could you still run? How many client records could you access? How many invoices could you prove you sent?

The Ownership Stack

Ownership isn't one thing. It's a stack. You don't truly own your business until you own every layer.

01WorkflowYou control how work gets done
02RecordsYou can prove what was agreed and paid
03TimeYou decide when and how you work
04MoneyYou know where every dollar went
05DataYou know where it is and who can see it
06SoftwareYou bought it, not leased it

Most freelancers own the top two layers and rent the bottom four. That's backwards. You can't build sovereignty on someone else's foundation.

Why LockMargin?

We didn't set out to build "invoicing software." We set out to build a tool that respects the Ownership Stack — every layer of it.

Offline by default

Your data lives on your machine. Not because we promise to be good. Because the software has no mechanism to send it anywhere. Network-free by default. No telemetry. No cloud endpoints.

Pay once, own forever

$49. One time. No subscription. No hidden tiers. No surprise price hike in 18 months. You bought it. It's yours.

No account required

We don't know your email. We don't have a database of users. We don't own your identity. You don't need our permission to use software you paid for.

Immutable records

Ownership of your records means you can prove what you sent. No he-said-she-said. No missing history. Snapshot billing creates an exact, unchangeable record of what was agreed.

Open format

SQLite. JSON. CSV. Your data is not locked in a proprietary vault. Any tool can read it — today, tomorrow, in ten years. Even if LockMargin disappears.

The data layer is open source: schema, export and decryption tools are public. Your file opens with your password and any tool - not only mine.

Traceability

Every action leaves a trail you control. Not a log file on someone else's server — a record you can hold in your hand, inspect, archive, or present to a tax authority.

How it works

  1. Download and open. No account, no email, no setup wizard. Install and work.
  2. Run your business. Clients, hours, invoices, expenses — one encrypted database file on your machine.
  3. Stay free to leave. Export SQLite, JSON, CSV, or PDF anytime. Your data leaves only when you say so.

Unplug the cable. Nothing changes.

Track time, write invoices, export PDFs with the internet off. Offline is not a feature here. It's the default.

The Landlord Test

Before you adopt any new tool, ask these five questions. They're uncomfortable because they're supposed to be.

  1. If the company shuts down tomorrow, can I still access my data in a usable format?
  2. Can I open my files without their software, their servers, or their permission?
  3. If they double the price next month, do I have a real alternative — or just the pain of migration?
  4. Do I know exactly where my data is right now, physically?
  5. Can I prove what I sent, what was agreed, and what was paid — without asking them for a copy?

If you answered "no" to any of these, you're renting. Not using. Renting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to my data if LockMargin disappears?

Nothing. Your data lives in a file on your machine, in open formats (SQLite, JSON, CSV). Any tool can read it. You don't need us to keep your business running.

Do I need an account?

No. No email, no registration, no login. Download, install, work.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Offline is the default, not a mode. There is no cloud to connect to.

What does the free tier include?

Start is free to try — up to 5 clients, 5 projects per 30 days, unlimited invoices. No credit card required.

Can I move my data to another tool?

Yes. Export SQLite, JSON, or CSV anytime. No lock-in, by design.

What if my computer dies?

Your backup, your rules. The database is one file — copy it to any drive. LockMargin never phones home, so backups are yours to manage.

Is there a subscription?

No. Standard is $49 one-time. Major upgrades (v2.x) are 50% off for Standard users.
